The National Computer Board is the national partner in the IST Africa Initiative. IST-Africa is a collaborative Initiative between IIMC Ireland (Coordinator) and 19 African countries comprising of Ministries/departments and national agencies responsible for ICT. Its objectives is to promote research cooperation between European and African organizations, raise awareness of opportunities to participate in the FP7 ICT Research Theme in Africa and promote and support the inclusion of African research organisations as partners in FP7-ICT proposals. It is funded as a Specific Support Action by the European Commission under the ICT Programme of Framework Programme 7 (FP7).
FP7 is 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development in European countries and the programme has a total budget of over € 50 billion. With the support of IST-Africa, African countries can collaborate with European countries in research projects. Living Labs are environments, a methodology or an approach which caters for user-driven open innovation within real-life rural and urban communities, where users can collaborate with multiple committed stakeholders (whether NGOs, SMEs, industrial, academic/research, government institutions or funders) to become co-creators or co-designers of innovative ideas, processes or products within multidisciplinary environments. Successful deployments can result in improved processes or service delivery, new business models, products or services, and can be replicated (with necessary socio-cultural adaption) to improve overall quality of life and wider socio-economic impact (including entrepreneurship) in participating and other communities.
As the national partner in the IST-Africa Initiative, the National Computer Board organised a two day workshop in cooperation with IIMC Ireland. The workshop was held on the 15th and 16th November 2012 at La Canelle, Domaine Les Pailles as follows:-
Day 1 - IST-Africa Framework Programme 7, which will focus on an overview of FP7, all Open Action Lines under FP7-ICT-Call 10 – 11 and guiding participants to prepare proposals and how it is evaluated.
Day 2 - IST-Africa Living Labs Training, which will focus on providing an introduction to the Living Labs concept, examples of operational and emerging Living Labs and how these have evolved in other African states as well as in Europe?
